Humor in Ignorance

Laughing at ignorance
Ignorance refers to the state of being uninformed, unaware, or uneducated. This condition plagues our society, and its impact is anything but "funny."

However, a lot of humor can be found within the words and actions of the ignorant. And it just so happens... that I'm in the mood to laugh today. So, here we go...

I write in an attempt to educate, inspire, and motivate. And despite the fact that my site is called "Lucky Dog Rescue Blog," a lot of non-rescue, non-dog-freak people come here, to read what I have to say. I won't lie... that's pretty awesome. That's how views change, actions change, and quite honestly... the world begins to change.

However, there are those few... shall we say... asshats, that come here just to argue. Now, trust me, I'm totally willing to have an educated debate with anyone who wants to challenge my passion, my knowledge, and my experience.
Bring. It. On.

But when common sense, rationale, and basic decency are... how should I say this... completely freaking absent, then the "educated" piece of that debate puzzle is... well,  impossible

Here's the deal: If I'm not educated on a topic, then I certainly don't try to prove my ignorance... by forcing a completely ridiculous, childish, I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I debate on the subject. I'll gladly keep my mouth shut... to preserve my dignity.

But others don't seem to share my views on humility. Instead, they'll wave that Ignorance Pride flag high in the sky, for everyone to see. Good for y'all. Humiliation looks good on ya.

Like it or not, ignorance is alive and well, and I can certainly accept that most people exhibit some level of unawareness in one area or another. But the people who truly amaze me, are those who actually boast about their ignorance. They're not only proud of their limited, misinformed views, but they'll actually state their opinions as fact, in a ridiculous, lengthy argument about something... that they honestly know nothing about.

And here's the best part: They're too ridiculous to realize... that their uneducated rants actually do an incredible job of disproving whatever useless point they wish to make. It's simply freaking brilliant.

Let's look at some classic examples of Ignorance Pride in action:

Exhibit A: "I know that I'm right. I found this info on Google."

You're kidding?! Google!!! Oh my goodness... that's totally the same as scientific research! And from what I hear, the ability to perform Google searches requires a very rare level of "experience" and "expertise." You should totally stick that bad boy on your resume: "Googler."

Exhibit B: "I know what I'm talking about. I heard it straight from my friend, who heard it directly from a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-grandmaw's-uncle's-brother's-cousin's-sister's-aunt's-mama's-friend-of-a-friend. It happened to him."

Wow, really?! That's pretty much the truest story of all time! Everyone knows that you can always trust stories... that were passed down from those random, unknown friends, of someone else's grandmaw's sister's cousin's friends. It's so the same as being there to see it. Always holds up in court.

Exhibit C: "I know this is true. It's all over the news."

Oh my gosh, totally! That definitely makes it true! Plus, watching the news, while eating a Hot Pocket, can totally make you a qualified expert on the subject. Did you see when the media reported that Elvis is still alive? So informative! I also saw Breaking News that the troops found Osama bin Laden... about 50 times before they actually did. I believe it. Then, I heard something about Paris Hilton sleeping with an alien. Slut! She totally did.

Here's some shocking info for ya: Google does not an expert make. Hear-say does not equal first-hand experience. Media coverage does not ensure truth.

But ignorance promises ignorance... that's for damn sure. And these folks are certainly well-versed in that department. If only everyone had that jackwagon mindset... we could still be living in those bad-ass caves without power. Bummer.

Thanks to the delusional ignorance of these jink-jankers, the world is way less awesome than it could be. But here's the good news: We're way smarter than them, so the ignorant can never win... unless we let them.

And in the meantime, we can laugh...

  6. Very well put Ashley! Especially after all of the "proud ignorance" on the Truth about Pit Bulls blog. Clearly boatloads of ignorance appeared on there that gave us all that "can anybody be that stupid" look as we read it. The answer to that.."you'd be surprised how many truly stupid and ignorant there are!" And boy does it really seem to come out when trying to have a discussion about "pit bulls", not to mention quite a few people don't even really know what a "pit bull" is or that it consists of many breeds. Also it's truly amazing that people take the media as gospel, and think because something wasn't in the media it's not true..another sure sign or ignorance for sure. In time maybe they will see how they look and sound and choose to be on the educated side of things..until then i'm with you-we laugh! :)

  18. Pet Pardons is a wonderful site and provides so much information about the dolls who are facing unknown odds. It helps us to reach out and advocate, chipin and do what we can to help these precious little lives. Sometimes I watch in vain to see who got pardoned, sometimes I cry. Sometimes I smile and laugh knowing another precious life is saved. Thank you for your love of the furkids. I have 7 dogs, 3 cats and a huge paint gelding! There may not be a lot of room in my yard, but my heart is indefatigable.

  19. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! This totally made my day!! You have inspired me to be a more involved person in the justice for animals and animal rights. Pit Bulls have ALWAYS been one of my favorite breeds and now that I have adopted one from you (Teddy) it inspires me even more every day to spread the word about how GREAT they are! I actually convinced a few people that I know to adopt Pit Bulls from our local shelters and rescues. As well as changing many minds on the breed just by them meeting my wonderful boy!! We can and will change the world one ignorant person at time... I know we will!!

  20. Most of the people you are talking about have an affliction that you do not have to worry about. It is called a penis. It should be called a stupid stick because people who have one are usually stupid, the possesses of the stick do incredibly stupid things to get women to swing from it, and otherwise smart women do stupid things to do the swinging. It really is the root cause of stupidity in mankind. Now I have to convince Pocket that the nice Animal Rescue lady from Mississippi does not want to fry her up and eat her.

  21. Lmao @ the Hot Pocket part and "jink-jankers". I don't even know what a jink-janker is, but it sounds about right...

  22. True that. Great example: Yesterday I shared the link to the 100+ Dogs Abandoned in Everglades Florida site on my FB page, a tragic situation of which I am sure you are aware.

A "friend" posts the following comment: Aren't dogs supposed to live out in the wild??

Seriously? People never cease to amaze me.

  23. OH and then there was the guy last week who posts pictures of pigs with tattoos ALL over them, claiming "they don't feel nothin" and apparently thinks it's the coolest thing in the world. I tell him perhaps he should tattoo himself instead and he replies "It don't hurt em none. Have you ever had bacon? At least I'm not murderin em." (I'm vegan)

I couldn't agree with you more Ashley. Some people just have no clue and others just want to argue, but without anything to back up their stance. It does get downright comical at times. As a vegan and avid proponent of animal rescue, I find I am constantly getting grilled about why and what and how. It is therefore my duty to be educated about these issues and like you, I enjoy engaging in an intellectual dialogue about these topics with anyone who has a lick of sense. But you're right, sometimes all you can do is laugh. Thank you for this.

  25. A great example of this type of idiocy is displayed daily on this moron's blog: http://cravendesires.blogspot.com/ (I have no idea why she chooses to call herself something so, um, provocative.) This is the same woman who fought the Villalobos Rescue Center's move to central California. It's always funny to read the comments.

  26. i am eleven years old, and i absolutely believe that buying a dog from a breeder is wrong! those dogs come from a little cage filled with poop and pee where they are forsed to live until one day they get adopted into a family that gives them up because of the medical bills due to breeding! i feel that its better to be uncool with a shelter dog than worthy with a dog from a breader! if being unworthy means saving a life that call be all the names in the book because i will never give in to the thought that breeding is right, and that is should be allowed in our already messed up world!

  28. My wife and I had the pleasure to meet Ashley in person in the 1st week in Nov. 2011. We were in a motor home and drove up to see her! My wife is as much of a dog lover as Ashley so she has been following her blog for awhile now.

Let me just say this right now: I'm 59 years old and I have NEVER met a person like Ashley before. She is AMAZING. She practically does everything at her shelter by herself which includes feeding, cleaning the place and making sure all the dogs get exercise. We wanted to help, so Ashley allowed us to walk some dogs for a few hours until I just couldn't walk anymore.

If you have anything to give this blessed person to help her in saving as many dogs as she can, PLEASE do! Every $1.00 helps. We help :) Tell your friends, gather up your loose change and donate to this cause through her web site. Tell your friends about this web site.

Thank you Ashley for taking the time to show us around your facility and thank you for caring about our four legged friends. You are AWESOME!
